Biography

I teach 6th and 7th grade math at Amos Hiatt Middle School.  This is my second year teaching at Hiatt and I have truly enjoyed working with the staff and forming relationships with my students.  I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Education and a minor in Special Education. I am originally from Harlan, Iowa and have lived in Des Moines for 2 years.

Marty Simpson

Biography

I have been at Hiatt for two years in the special education department. I have lived in Des Moines all my life and am a graduate of Dowling High School and Upper Iowa University. I am married (Denise) and have two boys (Trent and Nick), the oldest at Ellsworth Community College and the youngest attends St. Theresa's School. I have enjoyed coaching youth sports and now enjoy watching my boys in their sports and time with my family.

Mary Fitzwater

Biography

As an 8th Grade Social Studies teacher I am responsible for teaching 8th grade Civics with an emphasis on citizenship and how our government works.

I graduated with honors from Iowa State University with a degree in Elementary Education and hold endorsements in the following areas: K – 8 Social Studies, K – 8 Reading, K – 8 Multi-categorical Special Class with Integration, K – 8 Instructional Strategist I; Mild/Moderate; K – 8 Health, and K – 12 Athletic Coach.

Socials Studies is my passion and I have been teaching in this area for a number of years. Today more than ever it is important for our students to learn and understand about their own country as well as countries and cultures around the world so they are prepared for life beyond high school. Whether that is going to college or trade school or jumping right into the job market. Our world it is expanding rapidly and it is important to know how Americans are involved from the local level on up to the national level and beyond, to our responsibilities in the world. This is what the Des Moines Public Schools Social Studies curriculum is prepared to do, get our students ready for the 21st century and beyond!

Patty Gronewold

Biography

I began teaching at Amos Hiatt in the fall of 1988.  I have taught math at all three grades over years.  I have served Hiatt outside the classroom in a variety of ways.

I am married and have two children.  We live on the East side of Des Moines.  Both of my children have attended East High School.  Outside of school I enjoy being with my family, sports, and reading.

Rachel Crane

Biography

I am excited to be joining the Hiatt team, where I can share my passion for science and understanding how the world works with students.  I am originally from Mason City and attended Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.  I have returned to Iowa after teaching in New York and Chicago for 9 years.  I live with my husband, Mike, and our son, Stanley.
