Joseph Green, Principal

Longtime DMPS teacher and school leader Joseph Green is the principal of Hiatt Middle School, where he has served since 2019.

Green, a graduate of Des Moines Public Schools, has also spent his career in education at DMPS, beginning in 2000 as a 7th grade geography teacher at McCombs Middle School. He went on to serve as the dean of students at Harding and Goodrell middle schools; was the School Improvement leader at Hoyt Middle School; and in 2018 became vice principal at North High School. Green earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.

“DMPS has been a part of my entire life, from growing up in Des Moines as a student to returning after college as a teacher,” added Green. “The educational and cultural diversity at this school district provides many opportunities to our students. I am looking forward to joining the Hiatt community, in particular making sure that, through our focus on equity, we are doing everything we can to help our middle school students succeed.”

Hiatt Middle School serves 650 students in grades 6-8.
